This is like rubbing salt in the wound.
White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas was forced to leave Tuesday's 9-0 loss to the Orioles after colliding with a teammate while attempting a routine catch.
The play that led to Vargas' ejection came in the bottom of the second inning when former White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez hit a pop fly into shallow left field with Andrew Benintendi, Jacob Amaya and Vargas all trying to catch the ball.
While Amaya ducked after realizing two other players were attempting the same catch, Benintendi and Vargas continued to pursue the ball, causing the two to collide, with Vargas hitting the left fielder hard on the shoulder.
Vargas immediately fell to the ground holding his face in obvious pain, while Benintendi attempted to kick the ball as it landed on the ground.
“Oh my goodness! The White Sox have become totally like the White Sox,” Orioles play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown said on the MASN telecast.
The error led to two more runs in an inning in which the Orioles scored four runs against the struggling White Sox, stretching their lead to 7-0.
The AL Central team later announced that Vargas left the game with an abrasion over his right eye and would undergo further evaluation.
After Vargas was ejected, Lenin Sosa advanced from second to third base and Brooks Baldwin reached second base.
Things didn't get much better for the White Sox in the second half of the game, with interim manager Grady Sizemore and Benintendi both being ejected by home plate umpire Hunter Wendelsted in the sixth inning.
Sizemore was ejected after he began complaining to Wendelstedt about a strike call he was not happy with.
They then emerged from the dugout and a more heated conversation ensued, eventually ending with the two of them facing each other.
The next pitch, Benintendi was called out for a questionable hit and was ejected after colliding with Wendelstedt.
The loss to the Orioles was the White Sox's 109th loss of the season, moving them 11 away from tying the modern record set by the Mets in 1962.
