Chicago White Sox outfielder Tommy Pham had a frustrating moment during his team’s 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon.

In the top of the eighth, with one out and runners on second and third, Chicago hit a fly ball to left field. The ball didn’t go very far, but that didn’t stop the White Sox third base coach from sending Pham out for a touch-up play to see if he could tie the game.

Pham was tagged out by William Contreras as he slid in to end the inning and was hit from a mile away. It was a big moment in the game, and Contreras got emotional and yelled something at Pham, who obviously didn’t like what he said.

Pham turned around on his way back to the dugout, and coaches and players had to stop him from charging toward the Brewers. White Sox announcer John Schlifen was also furious in the booth.

“Contreras is yelling. Tommy Pham is yelling back!” Schlifen yelled into his headset. “He’s not backing down. I don’t like that. And now home plate umpire Edwin Jimenez has to hold Pham back. No, we’re not going to tolerate that. We’re not going to tolerate that from the Brewers!”

In a postgame locker room interview, Pham offered some provocative comments about what Milwaukee and other MLB teams might do with him on the field if he were to start something.

“A one-run game, a close game at home plate.” Pham says When asked to explain what happened, he said, “It wasn’t really anything close. It was just a shallow fly to the left fielder. The left fielder is supposed to get the runner out on that play.”

“The third base coach gives you the order, you’ve got to go. I’m glued to home plate a mile away. I go into the dugout and hear ‘tough guy’ and all that fuss. I’m never going to start anything, but I’m prepared to see it through. There’s a reason I get into all kinds of fights in the offseason, because I’m prepared to beat the crap out of somebody. Just take it as it comes.”

Pham, 36, joined the White Sox this season but started the year in Triple-A. He was promoted to the team in late April with a dismal 3-22 record, and after Sunday’s loss, the team still had the worst record in the league at 15-45.

Pham, who played for the National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets last season, has been performing well since being promoted, batting .287/.333/.411 with three home runs, seven doubles and 12 RBIs in 32 games played through Sunday. He was hitless in three at-bats and walked one in this game.

Chicago has struggled all year and has yet to even make it to the All-Star break, but Pham has made it clear he’s willing to stand his ground no matter what the record says.
