Governor Whitmer Discusses Tariffs and Medicaid with President Trump
On Tuesday, Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer met with President Trump at the White House, voicing concerns about how the President’s tariff policies have impacted her state.
This marks Whitmer’s third meeting with Trump this year, showcasing her willingness as a prominent Democrat to engage directly with the President. Besides tariffs, they addressed the repercussions of changes in Medicaid and recovery efforts from natural disasters, according to her office.
Whitmer stated, “I’ve always believed that collaboration is key to getting things done for Michigan. That’s why I have kept traveling to Washington, D.C., ensuring that Michigan remains a priority when important decisions are being made.”
She added, “I will continue to do everything I can to ease life for Michiganders and strengthen our economy. We need to focus on cutting costs and creating better-paying jobs in Michigan. I appreciate the President for his time and focus on the topics we discussed.”
The governor also had discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses, and White House Staff Secretary Susie Wills.
In her remarks, Whitmer explained how Michigan is affected by changes in Medicaid insurance provider ratings, advocating for a longer transition period to ensure Medicaid stability across states.
She emphasized the adverse effects of tariffs, particularly on Michigan’s automotive sector. Trump has set a 25% tariff on car imports, and similar tariffs on Mexico and Canada have only worsened challenges for the auto industry. Whitmer also brought up Trump’s interest in a manufacturing site in Genesee County, which could potentially attract investment.
This meeting was held privately, and Whitmer’s previous visit to the White House surprised many when she appeared in front of the cameras unexpectedly.
Emerging as a possible 2028 presidential candidate, Whitmer argues that her discussions with Trump have led to positive changes for her state. During his April visit to promote investments at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, Trump praised the governor.
