On CNN’s “The Source” broadcast Tuesday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), a co-chair of the Biden campaign, answered a question about whether she considers frozen embryos to be human and explained what her views are. He said it doesn’t matter what it is. The important thing is that parents and the attending physician agree on what is right for them and how to define it. ” And, “I’m not a doctor and I’m not involved in anyone’s individual situation.”
Host Caitlan Collins said, “You’ve talked about your concerns about what happened in the Alabama Supreme Court and the IVF ruling and how it impacts other reproductive rights.” We expressed our concerns about the ruling, but we did not say whether that is the case.” Don’t you agree that frozen embryos are considered human beings? What is your position on that? ”
Whitmer responded, “Who cares what my position is, Caitlan?” The important thing is that parents and doctors agree on what is right for them and how to define it. The only person whose opinion matters is that person, not the judge, the politician, or the governor of another state. That’s the fundamental issue here. Are we going to empower Americans to make their own health care decisions and to make decisions about how and whether to start a family? And that’s what I’m fighting for here in Michigan. ”
Mr Collins continued: “That said, you’ve been on the front lines on this issue. I think people care what you think about it.”
Whitmer responded: “Yeah, but I’m not a doctor and I’m not involved in anyone’s individual situation. Yesterday, when we introduced this surrogacy bill, it meant that people who had undergone IVF and were unable to carry the baby until delivery. So I’ve heard from parents who have had surrogate mothers do it, who were worried about what would happen to them, seeing all the laws that were changing: losing the ability to make decisions about those embryos. Several parents who attended our event testified that they decided to destroy the embryos. That was their decision. They were their fetuses. Governments and politicians made that choice. I don’t think you should go in the middle of it.”
