Tennessee’s Mark Green Retires, Prompting Race for 7th Congressional District
Former Representative Mark Green of Tennessee officially retired over the weekend, leaving several candidates eager to step into his shoes. Green had announced his retirement in June, citing “exciting opportunities” in the private sector as a reason. He planned to finalize his departure following the signing of President Donald Trump’s significant bill on July 4th.
With his departure, the Republican majority in the House has now decreased to 219 seats, while Democrats maintain 212. Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee, along with the Secretary of State’s office, quickly confirmed that the primary election is set for October, followed by the general election in December.
“It’s a heartfelt goodbye,” Green shared, reflecting on his 40-year career in public service. “To my constituents in the 7th district of Tennessee—thank you. The trust you placed in me humbles me. I value the years spent as your voice in Washington.”
As the political scene heats up, several Republicans are aiming for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, a traditionally Republican area. Candidates such as Jody Barrett from Dixon County and Lee Reeves from Franklin County have already started their campaigns. There are also mentions of other potential candidates, including veterans and former officials.
As of now, the National Republican Congressional Committee has not yet announced any endorsements for these candidates. The political landscape is shifting, and eyes are on who might ultimately fill Green’s role in Congress.
