Who is Derek Dixon? The 'Oval' actor who is alleging sexual assault against Tyler Perry in a $260 million lawsuit

Tyler Perry is facing accusations of sexual assault and harassment from actor Derek Dixon, who has launched a significant lawsuit seeking $260 million against the writer, director, and producer.

So, who exactly is Derek Dixon? Here’s a rundown of his background, his connection to Perry, and other relevant details.

Who is Derek Dixon?

Dixon gained recognition for his role as Dale in numerous episodes of the political drama, The Oval, which is a project of Perry. His character also featured in the show’s spinoff, Ruthless.

Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Dixon has a modest presence on social media, often sharing rare updates on his Instagram profile.

How did Derek Dixon meet Tyler Perry?

According to court filings, Dixon asserts that he first encountered Perry at a Tyler Perry Studios event in Atlanta back in 2019, where Perry supposedly selected him from the audience.

Dixon claims he was cast in a role that required frequent interactions with Perry.

They reportedly exchanged contact details at this event, leading to Dixon’s involvement in both Ruthless and The Oval.

Why is Derek Dixon suing Tyler Perry?

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles on June 13, 2025, accuses the successful producer of sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation.

In the documents, Dixon describes how Perry allegedly fostered a “ruthless, sexually exploitative environment” while working together on both shows.

Dixon states he was concerned about losing his job on The Oval if he spoke out against the harassment.

The lawsuit further claims that Perry made unwanted sexual advances starting in January 2020 at his Atlanta residence.

During a visit where Dixon had reportedly over-imbibed, he claims Perry came to bed with him and made unwelcome physical contact. He also alleges that Perry communicated sexual messages to him regarding preferences and experiences.

Following his hiring for The Oval, Dixon claims Perry continued to send such messages, questioning his sexual interests and noting past relations with men.

Dixon’s complaint details that he felt compelled to visit Perry again later in 2020 due to fears regarding his job security.

In his assertion, Dixon relayed an instance where Perry physically accosted him, leading Dixon to realize his employment was precariously linked to his interactions with Perry.

Throughout this ordeal, Dixon maintained ongoing fear of job loss if he didn’t tolerate the alleged harassment.

He is seeking $260 million in damages for claims rooted in workplace sexual harassment, assault, and battery.

What happens next?

The lawsuit is still in progress.

In a statement from Perry’s attorney, he labeled the lawsuit as “fraud,” suggesting that Dixon had ulterior motives in approaching Perry.

According to the statement, “Tyler will not be intimidated, and I am confident these fabricated claims will not prevail.”
