Key Figure in Biden’s Strategy Faces Scrutiny
Michael Donilon, a long-time advisor to former President Joe Biden, appeared before the oversight committee chaired by James Comer on Wednesday, focusing on an investigation regarding autopen usage. Their working relationship dates back to 1981, when Biden was a senator from Delaware.
Donilon, who is well-acquainted with Washington, holds both a bachelor’s and a J.D. from Georgetown University. Additionally, he has served as the chief strategist for Biden’s campaigns in both 2020 and 2024. His role in Biden’s political trajectory includes a controversial moment after a challenging debate against Donald Trump in June 2024, where he was noted for his criticisms toward fellow Democrats.
Discussions of Party Unity
During a recent event at Harvard, Donilon commented on the current state within the party. “A lot of people are having a terrible discussion right now,” he remarked, suggesting that a loss of unity among the party’s ranks was evident, something he found concerning.
His work has drawn both praise and criticism from various quarters, including figures like former Obama advisor David Axelrod. Despite his pivotal role in Biden’s ascendancy, Donilon previously contributed to successful campaigns, such as those of Bill Clinton in 1992 and Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder in 1989.
Investigation Developments
After his tenure in the Biden administration, Donilon’s involvement in the 2024 campaign attracted the attention of the House Oversight Committee. Some reports have described him as part of a tight-knit group, sometimes referred to as Biden’s “Politburo”, that played a significant role in shaping the White House’s direction.
One particular author noted that Biden valued Donilon’s advice highly, even joking that with that level of influence, he could start a war on Biden if he chose. The book claims that Donilon was compensated around $4 million for his work on the reelection campaign.
Crucial Role in Campaign and Transition
In December 2024, it was revealed that Donilon acted as an intermediary between Biden and his polling team throughout the campaign. He stood alongside Biden until the end of his presidency and was reportedly involved in drafting a significant letter that ultimately concluded the campaign.
Following his departure from the administration, Donilon took on the role of a resident fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Political Science for the Spring 2025 semester.
