The University of Michigan has dismissed Sherrone Moore following the discovery of “credible evidence” regarding an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Shortly after this announcement, he was taken into custody.
It’s quite a turnaround for Moore, who not long ago enjoyed the spotlight as a national champion in college football.
His career has not been without its controversies, particularly during inquiries into potential sign-stealing associated with Michigan State.
Let’s briefly examine how Moore arrived at this point.
Early Life and College Career
Moore, who played college football, stood over six feet tall and weighed more than 300 pounds. After spending two years at a community college near his home, he transferred to Oklahoma State. There, he completed two successful seasons and contributed to the team’s Big 12 Championship wins.
Despite the victories, the Sooners faced defeats in the Fiesta Bowl during those years.
Coaching Journey
Moore began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville shortly after graduating. He climbed the ranks, becoming a full-time assistant in 2012 and taking on the role of tight ends coach.
In 2014, he transitioned to Central Michigan, where he eventually became the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator in 2017 before joining Michigan’s staff in 2018.
Success at Michigan
Initially serving as the tight ends coach, Moore was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in early 2021. Under his guidance, Michigan’s offensive line thrived in both 2021 and 2022, helping the team make strides towards becoming a football powerhouse, including a run in the College Football Playoff.
Moore took on head coaching responsibilities in 2023 while Jim Harbaugh faced suspensions due to the sign-stealing scandal. During this period, Michigan had an impressive season, culminating in a national championship.
After Harbaugh’s departure, Moore was officially named head coach, leading the team to an 8-5 record in his first season, including a surprising upset against Ohio State.
Controversy and Arrest
However, Moore’s tenure took a dramatic turn when he was abruptly fired amid allegations of inappropriate conduct. Soon after being let go, he was arrested in connection to an assault investigation, though many details remain unclear.
The Pittsfield police indicated that one individual was already in custody related to the incident, which they believe was not random. As of this writing, charges against Moore had not yet been formally filed.
Moore, who has been married since 2015 and has three daughters, has faced significant scrutiny over these recent developments, casting a shadow over his coaching career.
Francis Xavier “Biff” Poggi has been appointed as interim head coach and will lead the team in their upcoming Citrus Bowl game against Texas.
