Who might take over from Keir Starmer as UK prime minister?

The leadership of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing challenges amid a controversy surrounding his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the U.S. ambassador, especially given Mandelson’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

Recent disclosures from Epstein’s records hint at potentially damaging revelations about Mandelson’s relationship with the late convicted sex offender, which could jeopardize Starmer’s position.

Despite the growing unrest, there isn’t a formal process in place for removing a Labor leader. A contender would require support from 80 MPs—about one-fifth of the party in the House of Commons—to initiate a challenge.

While no clear successor has emerged at this point, there are several individuals often mentioned as potential candidates to replace Starmer.

wes street

Wes Streeting, at 43, is the current Health Secretary and is known for his articulate stance on various issues, including the conflict in Gaza. Rumors about his ambitions for the leadership have circulated for some time, particularly last year, when allies of Starmer suggested he would resist any challenges to his leadership with Streeting’s name being a focal point.

Streeting, who has been an MP since 2015, has dismissed any speculation about replacing Starmer, calling those thoughts “nonsense.”

angela rayner

Angela Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister, has carved out her identity as a distinctive figure in politics. With a background that includes growing up in public housing and leaving school early to become a mother, she has a unique perspective that resonates with many.

At 45, Rayner was active in the trade unions before her election to the council in 2015. She quickly climbed the ranks during Labor’s time in opposition and became deputy leader in 2020. While she enjoys considerable support, she had to resign last year due to tax issues related to home ownership, and she’s waiting for the outcome of an official review.

Following the revelations about Mandelson from the Epstein documents, Rayner led a push among MPs to have the government transfer powers to the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee to determine which documents should be made public.

andy burnham

Andy Burnham, a well-liked former cabinet minister and current mayor of Greater Manchester, has long been viewed as a serious competitor to Starmer. However, his chances were hindered when Labor barred him from being the party’s candidate in a recent special election.

Burnham, who is 56, has previously held significant positions, including culture secretary and health secretary.

shabana mahmood

Shabana Mahmood, the current Interior Minister at 45, oversees some of the government’s most challenging areas, including immigration and law enforcement. She’s gained the backing of many from Labor’s right with her efforts to strengthen border controls and combat illegal immigration.

ed miliband

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is a former leader of the Labor party, having experienced a setback in the 2015 election. Although he has indicated a reluctance to re-enter the political spotlight, at 56, he remains one of the seasoned figures in the current Cabinet.
