Lindsey Vonn’s Defiant Response to Retirement Speculation
She’s more than just a legend.
In February, the renowned Olympic alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, now 41, faced a serious health scare where amputation was a consideration for her leg. Yet, she’s made it clear that retirement is not on her agenda.
Recently, she took to social media to address critics questioning her career choice after a fall during the Olympics. One fan suggested it might be time to step away from her storied career. Vonn replied, “Who said I was retiring?” to the individual insinuating she should hang up her skis.
Another user suggested she should call it quits after the severe injury, hinting at her strong ego in the sport. But Vonn clarified, “[I] think you’re mistaking my ego for joy.” She reiterated her passion for skiing, stating, “When I’m ready, I’ll put my foot up, thank you.”
To further elaborate, Vonn shared on Twitter that she is not ready to discuss retirement. Her priority at the moment is recovery from her injury and returning to a normal life. She mentioned that although she’s been retired for six years, she’s lived a fulfilling life outside of skiing. Remarkably, she returned to world number one status at age 41, even setting a new record in her sport.
Vonn emphasized that she doesn’t require anyone’s approval to pursue what makes her happy. “That might mean racing again, or it might not. Time will tell. Please stop telling me what I should do. I’ll let you know when I decide,” she asserted.
She remarked that her focus is purely on recovery right now. “Just because you’re not ready to talk about retirement doesn’t mean you’re out of the race… It just means you’re not ready to think about it yet,” Vonn explained. “Rehab and recovery come first, and then I’ll figure out what lies ahead.”
Her final thoughts? There’s still plenty of life left to experience. When the time comes for her to make a decision, she’ll cross that bridge then.
Lindsay Vonn truly embodies beauty, intelligence, and resilience.
