A mother from Virginia, who had dedicated years to nursing sexual assault victims, was tragically killed in what police allege was a disturbing rape fantasy planned by her unfaithful husband and the nanny.
Christine Banfield, 37, had worked for at least two years as a sexual assault nurse examiner at a crisis center on Long Island, after obtaining her nursing degree from Stony Brook School of Medicine.
Later, she became a supervisor within Suffolk County’s domestic violence program, according to her LinkedIn profile.
However, less than a decade after her hard work, Christine faced a horrific ordeal similar to what many of her patients experienced. In February 2023, she died from severe stab wounds inflicted by a stranger who broke into her home while she slept.
Curiously, the person arrested wasn’t her attacker but her husband, 40-year-old IRS agent Brendan Banfield. He was taken into custody in September 2024, over a year later, and charged with masterminding the entire attack to remove Christine and run away with their daughter, who is 25.
During the couple’s assault-murder trial last week, prosecutors claimed that Brendan and his accomplice, Joseph Ryan, 38, were lured into their home by pretending to be Christine on a fetish website, seeking someone to engage in violent fantasies.
Magalhães, who testified after striking a plea deal, described how she and Brendan intended to burst into the bedroom, shoot Ryan, and then stab Christine until she died.
It emerged that Brendan had decided on this gruesome plan just two months after he started an affair with Magalhães, who was then 21. He seemed to think Christine was a “bad” mother and didn’t want to face a costly divorce.
However, Christine’s social media painted a very different picture. She often shared touching moments with her daughter, whom she affectionately called “the sun” and “my world.”
Her last post, only three days before her murder, showcased a drawing by her daughter titled “Queen Mom.”
Social media also reflected Christine as a devoted nurse working long hours throughout the pandemic and a fitness enthusiast who frequently celebrated her health journey.
She had a welcoming demeanor, writing in 2021 about an au pair who became like family to her daughter. This warm spirit seemed to have been a part of Christine’s nature, making her subsequent betrayal all the more heartbreaking.
After saying goodbye to her loved ones, Magalhães moved into the Banfield home to help care for Christine’s daughter. It wasn’t long before Brendan began an affair with her, marking a dark turn in their longstanding relationship.
The couple had met as college freshmen in 2004 and married in 2010, eventually relocating to Virginia in 2018 when their daughter was born.
When arrested, Brendan pleaded not guilty to the murder charges and maintained that Magalhães had invented the scheme under pressure to plead guilty to a lesser charge.
Christine’s social media, filled with photos of a seemingly happy family, often featured Brendan alongside heartfelt captions like “#truelove” and “My whole world in one photo.”
One notable photo, taken the day before their fifth wedding anniversary, showed the couple enjoying a playful moment together, with Christine sharing that it was her favorite from their wedding day, coupled with the hashtag “#tildeathdouspart.”
