Friday marked longtime “Wheel of Fortune” icon Pat Sajak’s last day as host of the popular TV game show, leaving questions about who will take over when he retires.
The final episode also marks the end of a 41-year, more than 8,000-episode career. Friday’s broadcast began with footage of Sajak’s first time hosting the spirited game show and ended with a farewell message from the beloved host.
He said it was “an incredible honor to be invited into millions of homes every night, every year, for decades,” according to the Associated Press report.
The 77-year-old’s departure signals a new era for “Wheel of Fortune” aficionados, as he will be succeeded by another legendary TV host: Ryan Seacrest.
He was the longtime host of “American Idol.” He signed a deal with Sony Pictures Television last year to replace Sajak, and his first episode as host is scheduled to premiere in September.
“I am truly honored to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Pat Sajak,” Seacrest said in a statement last year.
“I can’t wait to continue the tradition of spinning the wheels and work with the great Vanna White,” he added.
White, who co-hosted the show with Sajak for more than 40 years, paid tribute to his former colleague in comments Friday.
“As this chapter of our lives comes to a close, I know you are still close by. You are like a brother to me and I consider you a true friend for life. I will always adore you,” she told The Associated Press. “I love you, Pat.”
Sajak as Seacrest prepares to buy I expressed my gratitude. “Thank you everyone so much,” he posted on social media platform X.
In addition to “American Idol,” Seacrest hosts several other shows, including the radio show “On Air,” the annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
