“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg criticized herself and Staten Island after accusing a Staten Island bakery of refusing her service for political reasons on Monday's “The View.” There was no further discussion of the correspondence with Island's bakery.
Goldberg and her co-hosts celebrated her 69th birthday on Wednesday with a nostalgic New York treat: Charlotte Ruth's Dessert. Ms. Goldberg told the audience that most of her birthday orders went through because of the baker's opposition to her left-wing political positions.
“They said the oven was broken and all that stuff, but people just went and picked it up. So I'm not going to say who made it,” Goldberg said. She suggested that they may have refused the order because they “didn't like my politics.”
A subsequent inspection of Charlotte Ruth's dessert itself revealed that the bakery was Holterman's Bakery, a 145-year-old family-owned business on Staten Island.

Bakery owner Jill Halterman denied Goldberg's explanation, saying the bakery's problems were not politically motivated, but stemmed from a mechanical problem with the boiler, which was built in 1930. He explained that this is an ongoing issue.
“I told Whoopi, 'I can't do it right now,'” Halterman told the show. “There's so much going on in my boiler.”
But the co-hosts enjoyed the dessert on Wednesday's live broadcast, so they ended up ordering it.
Halterman appeared at a news conference Friday with Staten Island Borough President Vito Fosella to explain what happened.

“We've been here 145 years. The boiler was 60 or 70 years old, and the first week of November, guess what? It broke down,” Fossella said.
“They had it replaced, and Holterman's reputation is impeccable, so rather than commit to something they couldn't guarantee, they said, 'We can't do that.'” And they Those who slandered and slandered took it as an insult to her, well, this family will be here for another 145 years, God willing. ”

Goldberg appeared to double down on her suggestion in a follow-up video posted Friday.
“It seems a little strange that I called a few weeks before my birthday and was told they couldn't fulfill my birthday order due to equipment failure,” Goldberg said. in a follow up video. “But when someone else called without using my name, I was somehow able to accept another 48 orders of the same dessert.”
The View did not respond to requests for comment.
