Whoopi Goldberg unloads on Democratic pressure campaign against Biden over age: ‘Horrific’ messaging

“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg sounded angry on Monday, accusing Democrats of openly pressuring President Biden to drop out of the race.

“The message we’re sending to people over a certain age is terrible. We’re basically saying, ‘Hey, you know what? We think that if you’re over a certain age, you don’t really have what it takes to do the job you’re doing.’ That’s the message we’re sending. I’m tired of hearing it,” Goldberg said.

President Biden announced on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the presidential race and placing Vice President Harris in the top spot on the Democratic ticket. Biden’s announcement came after weeks of pressure from members of his own party.

“I wish Democrats hadn’t done this so publicly, in front of everyone,” Goldberg added. “We ended up having to sit down and talk about this at length.”

Co-host Alyssa Farrah Griffin, a former aide to President Donald Trump, pushed back, saying the president’s job is “very different than any other job.” Co-host Sara Haines said she wanted to distinguish Biden, who is also 81, from co-host Joy Behar, who is 81.

“It’s not the numbers that matter, it’s what those numbers look like to the person,” Haynes said.

Griffin also pointed out that being a host on “The View” is different from the job of president.

“Again, I’m speaking to people of a certain age because that’s the message that’s been conveyed: ‘You’re old. You’re old.’ And it really upset me, not because I’m close to them, but because I felt it was disrespectful,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg also took aim at Democrats who are considering challenging Harris, specifically Sen. Joe Manchin (I-Va.).

“I believe we won’t have a problem here because that’s what everybody said they wanted it to be. Don’t think about that, Manchin,” Goldberg said after touting Harris’ fundraising efforts. “We don’t need you. We don’t need you. We know what you’ve done. Stay where you are, wherever you are.”

Manchin, who re-registered as a Democrat after Biden announced his candidacy and had signaled he might run, said Monday that he would not challenge Harris but called for a competitive nomination process and suggested a “mini-primary.”

Co-host Sunny Hostin also told Manchin to “take a seat.”

“I started speaking as if I was speaking for the Democratic Party. I’m speaking for Whoopi, sit down,” Goldberg added.
