Why Anne Burrell paused her role on 'Worst Cooks in America' before she passed away

Anne Burrell passed away on Tuesday at the age of 55, just a year after stepping away from television. The renowned chef was best known for her long-running Food Network show, *The Worst Cook in America*, which spanned 27 seasons from 2010 to 2024.

Back in March, Burrell appeared on *Spell Missing* podcasts where she shared the reasons behind her break from the spotlight. “I can make TV, sure, but I feel like I have more to explore in my life,” she explained.

She mentioned having started acting classes recently, stating, “It’s actually an improvisation of an actor’s class. I felt out of place at first; most of the others were younger and had advanced degrees in theatre.”

For Burrell, delving into the acting world was an entirely new challenge. “I had never taken an acting class before. I was a little intimidated, wondering if these talented kids were thinking, ‘What’s this older woman doing here?’”

She added that she was just “dipping [her] toes” into this new venture and felt quite excited about it. “I’m working on a few things, but they’re still under wraps. I hope they’re exciting,” she said.

During the podcast, Burrell also opened up about her marriage to Stuart Claxton in 2021 and stepping into the role of stepmother to her son, Javier. The couple had met on the dating app Bumble back in 2018.

When asked if she had intentionally waited until later in life to settle down, she reflected, “Since I was a child, I’ve always felt like I needed to have something to share before getting married. Until I achieved certain things, marriage felt like a distant thought.”

In her 20s and 30s, she described living a vibrant life as a chef. “I felt like a rock star, working hard and socializing a lot,” she remarked.

But a shift eventually occurred in her perspective. “I began to feel older and realized it was time for a change,” she admitted. While children hadn’t been on her radar, she mentioned that, “I love being an aunt, and I’m finding joy in being a stepmom.”

Just a month into her marriage, Burrell expressed her happiness, saying, “October will mark four years, yet it feels like four minutes. It’s calming down, and I genuinely enjoy being married.”

On Valentine’s Day 2022, she shared her affection for Claxton, exclaiming, “You make me the happiest girl in the world! I love you to the moon and back!”

Her family confirmed her passing with a heartfelt message: “Anne was a cherished wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend. She had a special way of lighting up any room.” They noted that her warmth and love would live on, even if she was no longer with them.

The cause of her death has yet to be disclosed. On the day she passed away, authorities stated that EMS responded to a call regarding an apparent cardiac arrest.

In a later report, it was mentioned that her body was found next to several bottles of medication. The investigation into her death is ongoing.

In their tribute, Food Network remarked, “Anne was an exceptional person and culinary talent. She often spoke about the joy food brought into her life.”

Friends and colleagues from her Food Network days offered their tributes as well. Beau MacMillan, who co-hosted the first season of *The Worst Cook*, described her as one of the industry’s most beloved figures who influenced millions.

Chef Alex Guarnaschelli shared a heartfelt message, urging everyone to celebrate Burrell’s life by enjoying moments that brought her happiness, like singing karaoke and embracing the love she had for her craft.
