Kwanzaa Celebrations from Sports Teams Raise Questions
Firstly, I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. With the new year approaching, we’re slowly shaking off that holiday haze. But while I’m still in vacation mode, there’s something that’s been bothering me.
I was scrolling through Twitter earlier today when I stumbled across a sports team’s post wishing everyone a happy Kwanzaa. Then, I saw another, followed by more—eventually, it felt like a flood of Kwanzaa greetings filled my timeline. It was quite the Friday celebration.
NFL teams joined in the festivities, too. It became a sort of avalanche of well-wishes.
Wishing everyone celebrating a Happy Kwanzaa 💙
Sending warm wishes of a merry Kwanzaa to all those celebrating.
Happy Kwanzaa, #CowboysNation!
With a wish #EaglesAnywhere Happy Kwanzaa!
Wishing you all a joyful and peaceful first night of Kwanzaa!
MLB teams got into it too.
Wishing all those celebrating a happy Kwanzaa! ❤️
Happy Kwanzaa to everyone celebrating! 🖤❤️💚
Even some NBA teams jumped on the bandwagon, posting greetings that felt, well, somewhat disconnected.
Happy Kwanzaa, #heatnation!
Unity. The purpose. Community. Happy Kwanzaa!
And surprisingly, NHL teams joined in as well.
We wish everyone celebrating a Happy Kwanzaa!
It didn’t stop there—college athletic teams and minor leagues also joined the fray, which just adds to the oddity of it all.
Wishing a Happy Kwanzaa to all celebrating Wildcats! ❤️🖤💚
Interestingly, research suggests only about 18% of Black Americans actually celebrate Kwanzaa, while a whopping 82% partake in Christmas. It makes you wonder—what’s going on in the sports world? Why all this emphasis on Kwanzaa? It feels somewhat out of place, don’t you think?
