Why Ayesha Curry was uncomfortable with the attention as Steph Curry rose to NBA fame

Ayesha Curry opened up about the rollercoaster of emotions she faced when her husband, superstar Stephen Curry, soared to NBA fame.

During a recent episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Ayesha shared some insights into the challenges Stephen encountered early in his career as a point guard.

“It’s a double-edged sword—part of it helped me step into the spotlight,” the 36-year-old said to host Alex Cooper. “I definitely had to put in the work to stay relevant, but, you know, it feels like there’s this big elephant in the room. I appreciate the opportunities, but honestly, I struggled with it a lot at first.”

Ayesha, who’s been married to the 37-year-old Curry since 2011, noted that both she and the 11-time NBA All-Star have different aspirations for their evolving future.

“I didn’t really foresee this,” she reflected. “I always thought he would become a high school basketball coach, not this.”

She went on to describe how sports fans feel very different compared to the entertainment crowd, and she found the intensity of it all quite unexpected.

Recalling a moment with their four children, Ayesha shared a story about nursing her daughter in their car. “A woman just, like, opened the door and peeked in, saying she wanted to see the baby,” Ayesha recounted. “I was just like, ‘Um, okay?'”

Then, she remembered how the woman spoke to her—almost dismissively—reminding her of the newfound reality. “It was a hard phase for me,” Ayesha admitted.

When asked if she faced harsh judgments about her appearance and actions, Ayesha replied, “Absolutely, all the time.”

She noted that the rise of social media intensified the scrutiny, making it even more challenging for her at the beginning. “In those early days, I was really critical of myself,” she said.

Ayesha acknowledged that Stephen has always been a strong support for her. “He’s just so kind,” she said. “He tries to understand where I’m coming from, but sometimes he just can’t. He’ll say, ‘That’s not true.’”

The couple recently celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary last month.

Ayesha reflected on how, during the initial years, she was too focused on her acting career and entrepreneurial ambitions to think about future marriage or children.

Having met at a church in Charlotte during their teenage years, Ayesha and Stephen have since welcomed their children: 13-year-old daughter Riley, 10-year-old son Ryan, and sons Canon, 7, and Caius, 1.

Since then, Ayesha has released several cookbooks, launched lifestyle brands along with her magazine “Sweet Jury,” and starred in the Food Network show “Ayesha’s Home Kitchen.”

This season marks Stephen’s 17th in the NBA, all with the Warriors, who selected him as the seventh overall pick in the 2009 draft.

Last season, the Warriors concluded with a 48-34 record and secured the seventh seed in the Western Conference, but they were defeated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference semi-finals.
