Why Biden's secrecy about his health is more serious than Watergate

Jake Tupper, who co-authored “original sin,” recently told Piers Morgan that the situation regarding President Joe Biden’s health was “probably even worse than Watergate.” But that’s not just a guess.

For over four years, Biden has been part of what some view as one of the largest deceptions in American political history. His administration consistently portrayed him as not just physically capable but in better health than anyone else in the White House.

White House staff dismissed public concerns about Biden’s age and eyesight, asserting he was fit enough to handle the demands of the job.

In one of the few instances where media outlets probed into Biden’s health, Press Director Karine Jean-Pierre claimed in an interview with CNN, “I can’t even keep up with him.” This is from the same person who once dismissed a video showing Biden stumbling as a “cheap fake.”

There’s a pattern here. Many administrations stretch the truth, but the Biden team appears to have taken things a step further.

In a report last February, special advisor Robert Huar concluded that Biden had broken the law but suggested that any judge would likely be lenient, considering Biden’s age and intentions. Biden reacted to this by offensively questioning Huar’s credibility, though it was indeed Biden who brought up his son Beau’s death during an unrelated query about classified documents.

Kamala Harris, among others in the administration, defended Biden vehemently, labeling Huar’s observations as “free, inaccurate, and inappropriate.” But the truth was that Huar’s claims had merit. He treated Biden with an extraordinary level of respect, which, regrettably, led to his own professional isolation afterward.

Despite the criticisms leveled at Huar, officials continued to project an image of Biden as nearly superhuman at 81.

Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security, remarked that “the most difficult part about meeting with President Biden is how prepared he is, sharp and detail-oriented.” But reports suggest Biden struggled with basic recognition tasks and was only working a few hours a day. Following a public gaffe, the administration seemed to hold off any serious discussions until mid-2024.

Even as these issues became apparent, Biden and those around him maintained that he was merely suffering from a cold and was committed to continuing his political journey against Trump. It wasn’t until immense pressure from within his party mounted that he reluctantly indicated he might step back.

There’s also ongoing speculation about Biden’s health, particularly concerning cancer. A Biden spokesperson noted that he underwent a prostate-specific antigen test eleven years ago, leaving many to wonder why he wasn’t checked again or if there were any other omissions involved.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) stated that his committee is seeking testimonies from members of the Biden administration regarding what they know about Biden’s health. There’s a demand for transparency—after all, those perpetuating false narratives should be held accountable.

Reflecting on Biden’s years in the Senate, parallels were drawn between his calls for accountability during the Watergate scandal and the present situation. He urged Nixon’s resignation amid that crisis, highlighting a stark contrast to the current administration.

While Nixon attempted to limit the fallout once he discovered the scandal, Biden seemingly orchestrated the misinformation from the outset of his presidency. From the moment he declared his candidacy in 2019, Biden misrepresented his health, insisting his aides repeat this falsehood.

Unlike Nixon’s era, the media landscape now has largely shielded Biden from scrutiny. By 2024, many reports indicated he was working sporadically and, arguably, not fully in control of the nation’s leadership.

This is problematic. For a considerable time, it appears the U.S. lacked a fully functioning president, and those around him were aware of it. Yet they chose to maintain the facade, arguably taking it further than Watergate ever did.
