Newly surfaced footage from the early days of the Iran war reveals the U.S. military facing challenging Iranian assaults.
The clip, shared by CBS News on Wednesday, was taken by a service member stationed at Camp Buehrig in Kuwait. It shows significant damage to the military facility, including buildings and equipment.
When asked for a comment, the Pentagon directed inquiries to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), who did not reply.
At the base, American forces endured missile and drone strikes. According to reports from three service members, Iranian F-5 jets were involved in the attacks, leading to the evacuation of the military personnel from the base.
“They hit us bad,” one soldier recounted. “It was horrible. A lot of brave guys stayed to fight — but people at home don’t know what went down. We had to leave the base.”
New footage obtained by CBS News shows Iranian missile and drone strikes on Camp Buehring, a major U.S. military base in Kuwait, during the opening days of the Iran war. Most of the roughly 7,000 troops had been relocated before the war, but more than 100 remained. Following repeated attacks, the remaining soldiers abandoned the base and relocated to remote positions in the Kuwaiti desert. One soldier described the base as “demolished,” saying, “They hit us bad. It was horrible,” and questioned why reinforcements never arrived. No U.S. troops were killed by enemy fire at Camp Buehring, but several were injured, including two struck by lightning after relocating to the desert. Source: CBS News

Prior to the war, over 7,000 troops based at Camp Buehrig were reassigned, leaving just over 100 personnel vulnerable to Iranian attacks, some reportedly launched from Iraq. Continuous missile and drone strikes forced the servicemembers to seek refuge in bunkers. Eventually, they evacuated the base and moved to forward operating bases in the Kuwaiti desert, according to CBS News.
“They were so close I could see their helmets,” another soldier shared. “They came in, struck us, and then they were gone.”
Throughout these assaults, military personnel faced ammunition shortages. A senior Army logistics official indicated to CBS News that they lacked, among other things, .50 caliber ammunition and Patriot missile batteries.(RELATED: Soldiers Wounded In Iran Reportedly Failed By Medical System)
“Camp Buehrig was demolished,” another service member commented. “There needs to be an investigation. Why didn’t anyone come to support us?”
The issue of accountability from Pentagon leadership regarding strikes against U.S. forces during the Iran war seems to be a persistent one. The Department of War only revealed details about attacks on U.S. bases in Kuwait, UAE, and several other locations after a mandatory report was submitted to Congress. Images and videos of the damage are scarce, as reported by CBS.
The video of Camp Buehrig, Kuwait, was authenticated by CBS through analysis of the metadata and cross-checking with other images of the base’s damage.
