Tragic Loss of 4-Year-Old Due to Flu Complications
In Ogden, Utah, the parents of four-year-old Ellie are grieving as they remember their daughter’s life following her passing from flu-related complications.
Ellie, whose full name was Elora “Ellie” Ann Rudd, recently lost her life. According to her family, she was rushed to McKay Dee Hospital after being diagnosed with both the flu and adenovirus, which can manifest symptoms similar to those of cold and flu and is also notably contagious.
The flu had spread through the family since around Christmas. Initially, Ellie appeared to handle the illness well, although the whole family was experiencing similar symptoms. A concerning cough led her mother, Sarah Rudd, to seek medical attention.
“I took her in, and they kept her overnight because her oxygen levels were low,” Sarah recounted. They had hoped to go home soon, but Ellie’s oxygen levels fell again. Unfortunately, her condition worsened, leading to pneumonia and sepsis, and requiring her to be airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital.
Doctors worked diligently to stabilize Ellie, focusing on her oxygen levels and blood pressure.
“I believe she spent about four days in the PICU. They performed a CAT scan on the day she died and discovered she had a stroke,” Sarah said. Due to the severity, they decided to remove her from life support, and she passed away.
Now, Sarah and Michael, Ellie’s parents, are reflecting on the joy their daughter brought to their lives.
“We named her after a character in ‘Willow’, the baby. Ellie was incredibly nurturing; she adored her baby dolls,” Sarah shared. “She enjoyed tucking them in for the night or putting them down for naps, and she had a fascination with Barbies and movies like ‘One Hundred and One Dalmatians’ and ‘Frozen’.”
Sarah noted, “She was the sweetest girl. Every day, she would come home from preschool with little gifts she made. She was receiving speech therapy and was making great progress this year.”
Michael added that Ellie was “always kind, sharing, and affectionate.”
“She loved to have dance parties in her sister’s room. They would turn off the lights and dress up,” Sarah recalled fondly.
At this point, the Rudds find themselves filled with more questions than answers, especially one that lingers in Sarah’s mind.
“I often wonder, ‘Why her?’… I really don’t understand why it hit Ellie so hard,” Sarah expressed. During this challenging time, their oldest daughter also dealt with pneumonia and bronchitis but is fortunately on the mend.
Despite this, the Rudd family is left with an immense sense of loss. To support them as they navigate through their grief and manage funeral and medical expenses, their relatives set up a GoFundMe.
“Hug your kids a little tighter, because you never know when the next day could be the last,” Sarah advised poignantly.
