The Paris Olympics are facing questions over their decision to allow two boxers disqualified from the 2023 world championships to compete in the women’s category.
Those questions deepened on Thursday when one of the players, Imane Kherif of Algeria, forced her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, to withdraw 46 seconds into their first-round match.
Taiwan’s Kherif and Lin Yu-ting were disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) from the world championships in New Delhi after failing gender eligibility tests.
But it is approved by the International Olympic Committee, which has no involvement in running the Olympics and has not required similar testing.
“All athletes competing in the women’s category comply with the eligibility rules,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said at a news conference on Tuesday. “They are listed as women on their passports and they are women.”
The difference between Lin and Khelib’s positions at the Olympics and world championships is the aftermath of a long-running dispute between the IOC and the Russia-led IBA over governance and integrity deficiencies, as well as reliance on funding from state energy company Gazprom.

In New Delhi, Kherif was disqualified before the gold medal match against a Chinese athlete because he “did not meet the eligibility requirements due to high testosterone levels.”
Lin is seeded No. 1 in the 57kg featherweight division, while Kherif is seeded No. 5 in the 66kg welterweight division.
Lin’s first match will be on Friday against Shitra Turdybekova of Uzbekistan.
On Thursday, Mr Kheriff hurriedly removed Mr Kalini from the position.

“I’m used to suffering,” Carini said after the fight. “I’ve never been hit like that. It’s impossible to continue. You have no right to say it’s illegal.”
“I went into the ring to fight, but after the first minute I didn’t want to fight anymore. I started to feel a lot of pain in my nose. I didn’t give up, but the punches were hurting so much that I decided I’d had enough. I left the ring with my head held high.”
Carini’s coach warned her about the risks before the match.
“I don’t know if her nose was broken. I have to talk to her, but a lot of people in Italy tried to call her and tell her: ‘Don’t go, it’s a man, it’s dangerous for you,'” Emanuele Renzini said after the match.
