Why Jaguars are a ‘sneaky’ possibility for Bill Belichick’s next job

Will Bill Belichick fly further south than Atlanta next offseason?

The Jaguars are off to an 0-3 start in coach Doug Pederson's third year at the helm, but Monday Morning Quarterback's Albert Breer noted that Belichick has the edge in Jacksonville if owner Shad Khan decides to make any major adjustments.

“To me, they're just a dirty trick by Belichick,” Breer said on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Tuesday, one day after the Jaguars' 47-10 loss to the Bills on “Monday Night Football.”

“(Khan’s son and Jaguars chief football strategy officer) Tony Khan has a strong relationship with Bill Belichick, and when he hired Doug Marrone full-time, he removed the interim tag. [in 2017]”That was largely on the advice of Bill Belichick. So Bill's been in the ears of the owners there for a while. And I wonder if that's ringing in the owners' heads right now.”

Breer said there's more to Belichick than just football that makes him appealing.

“And now you have to sell sponsorships, you have to sell suites, you have to sell all that stuff. Do you need more credibility?,” Breer said. “There are some factors that make it hard to completely rule out Belichick being viable in 2025. I think he has a house down the street. I think it's on I-95 in South Florida, so that wouldn't be a bad idea.”

Belichick spent the past 24 seasons in New England, winning six Super Bowl championships with future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady.

He left the team in January after a dismal 4-13 season and interviewed multiple times to fill the vacancy with the Falcons, but the position ultimately went to Raheem Morris.

Belichick, 72, has had multiple broadcasting jobs this season. ESPN reported. Earlier this month, he said he was leaving open the possibility of a coaching career in 2025, “if it's a good job and the right situation.”

The Jaguars are coming off a playoff appearance just two seasons back, but they have a crucial three weeks ahead of them as they try to rebuild, starting with Sunday's divisional game against the Texans (2-1).

The following week they will host the Colts (1-2) before traveling to London for an international game against the Bears (1-2) on Oct. 13.

Breer added that he feels “there's a lot at stake for a lot of people within that organization over the next few weeks.”

Pederson promised to evaluate everything after Buffalo beat Jacksonville.

“We need to make changes in play design, personnel, everything,” Pederson said, while not ruling out a quarterback switch to Trevor Lawrence.

“I'd call it all on the table. Those are all things I have to consider and things we have to consider and adjust as a staff.”

In addition to Lawrence, who was the Jaguars' No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jacksonville has former first-round pick Mac Jones in the backup role.

Jones, the Patriots' 15th overall pick in 2021, spent three seasons under Belichick, who benched the quarterback multiple times amid struggles in 2023.

The Jaguars hired Pederson in February of 2022 after the team's disastrous 2021 season under coach Urban Meyer.
