As the September 10 presidential debate approaches, Kamala Harris continues to challenge the rules of the ABC debates.
Former President Donald Trump announced he was happy with the rules that had been set, writing on Truth Social that “the rules were the same as the last CNN debate and seemed to work well for everyone.”
The rules will be similar to those used by CNN for the June 27 debate, including muting microphones while the other candidate is speaking and no studio audience.
But Harris doesn't want his microphone muted.
“On the one hand, you have Harris arguing that the rules need to be changed and there are live microphones, and on the other hand, the Trump campaign is saying right now, 'No, we're not going to change the rules,'” explains Matthew Peterson, editor-in-chief of Blaze Media.
Harmeet Dhillon, founder of the Center for American Freedom and a Trump campaign surrogate, thinks this speaks to Kamala's strategy.
“What this debate has made very clear is that Kamala Harris is going to rely on gimmicks to get through this debate. I think it would be intimidating for her to have to debate or stand in this particular format with the masters of debate,” Dillon told Jill Savage and Peterson.
“In this case, what she's hoping for at the open mic is to be able to use the tired female boss cliche — to cut him off when he makes a comment about her and say, 'I'm talking, now my turn, I'm claiming my time,' or whatever cliche she throws in there,” Dillon explains.
“She's also relying on having to take notes and have a seat,” she continued, noting that Kamala would probably want her “comforting Governor Tim Walz” nearby to “help her and hold her hand.”
“No, she's an adult. And the president of the United States is expected to go toe-to-toe with the world's worst tyrants, demagogues, dictators and evil people. And they have to do it without crutches, without props and without a lifeline,” she added.
