With the launch of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday, Kelly Stafford reflected on how several top prospects celebrate a life-changing night.
When her husband, Matthew Stafford was first drafted overall by the Lions in 2009, when asked Thursday by Hank Winchester, a co-host of the “Morning After” podcast while she was in New York, Kelly offered her honest take on including important others on draft night.
“If they’re drafted, you have your whole family and you’re in the draft, you don’t know why you’re going to do that because your girlfriend and girlfriend are in the draft photo. And then, all of a sudden, your girlfriend is gone, so you don’t have a draft photo without a random girl. Kelly said In the latest episode of their show.
The mother of four who dated Stafford in Georgia before tying Knott in 2015 compared the situation to a bridal party, comparing the sibling’s partner to whether they should include a sibling’s partner if their partner is not engaged.
“It’s like when your brother’s girlfriend isn’t engaged to your wedding. And suddenly, do you know what I mean? You have all these pictures with your family and brother’s girlfriend – not mine, but mine. [brother Chad Hall] I’m married [sister-in-law] Rose, so we were fine. Similarly, if Rose doesn’t marry Chad, what happens if she’s in all my wedding photos,” Kelly said.
When Winchester returned to Kelly, he wanted to make it clear that if their conversation really caused a fiery headline from you, there was no hurtful feelings about her not being Stafford’s part in the draft.
“When he was going through it, I really didn’t understand the situation, but then I’m getting older and I have a daughter, I kind of understand,” she said.
Stafford spent the first 12 years of his Detroit career being traded for Los Angeles in January 2021, sending Jared Goff to the Lions.
This trade worked for both organizations, with Stafford winning his first Super Bowl in his first season with the Rams. Meanwhile, the Lions have transformed into an NFC powerhouse along with QB coach Tandem from Goff and Dan Campbell.
Stafford was the subject of trade rumours earlier this offseason, but he and the Rams will regain their union once again and run it for the fifth season.
