Why Lions chose a surprising option for offensive coordinator instead of Mike McDaniel

McDaniel’s Fantasy Football Aspirations with Lions Fade

It seems that Mike McDaniel’s hopes of joining the Detroit Lions’ offensive staff were unrealistic.

While fans were excited about the possibility of McDaniel’s offensive strategies being used in Detroit, things didn’t pan out well with head coach Dan Campbell. Reports suggest that the pairing just wasn’t the right fit for the team, as noted by ESPN.

Instead, the Lions decided to hire Drew Petzing, the former offensive coordinator for the Cardinals.

Jeff Darlington pointed out that among the coordinator positions McDaniel interviewed for, the Lions’ job felt like the least likely match. Dan Campbell admired McDaniel’s skills, but ultimately, the Lions didn’t see him as a suitable choice. Moving forward, we’ll have to see how McDaniel filters through other openings. Now, it’s up to him where he lands next.

The decision to go with Petzing over McDaniel could prove critical, especially after a lackluster season for the Lions that ended without a playoff appearance.

McDaniel, despite some criticisms, has been recognized for his strong offensive capabilities. He played a pivotal role in the development of players in Miami, including talents like Devon Ashen, Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, Tua Tagovailoa, and Jonnu Smith.

Imagining McDaniel directing an offense featuring Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmil Gibbs, and David Montgomery feels intriguing on paper, doesn’t it?

Instead, the Lions have opted for Petzing. If you’re unfamiliar with him, you’re not alone. Petzing isn’t a name that means a lot to most, especially following a stint with the Cardinals that didn’t ignite much excitement. His tenure there didn’t scream innovation, and he doesn’t stem from the notable Shanahan and McVay coaching lineage.

Though the Cardinals had standout players like tight end Trey McBride and showcased a solid running game, their passing game was, let’s say, underwhelming, especially when considering receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

As for McDaniel’s future? He’ll be on the hunt for his next gig, but it appears more likely he’ll step into an assistant role rather than heading a team in 2026.

He’s been mentioned as a potential candidate for head coaching spots with the Browns, Raiders, and Ravens. Interestingly, as noted by Sports Illustrated, he has already interviewed with the Buccaneers and might view that position as a stepping stone towards potentially succeeding Todd Bowles as head coach.
