Humorous Robot Fail Goes Viral

Robots and artificial intelligence aren’t as common as some might think, and a recent viral video highlights this point. User X shared a clip, captioned “Best video I’ve ever seen,” and humorously hoped that robots wouldn’t turn against him for it.

The clip originates from an event at a customizable robot store in Shenzhen, China, known as Future Era. There, a robot dressed in white attempted to dance like Michael Jackson to “Billie Jean.” While the enthusiasm was there, the execution—well, not so much. Within just a few seconds, it stumbled on its first steps. And after a rather awkward moonwalk attempt, it faced a steeper challenge: navigating stairs. Spoiler alert: it didn’t make it. The robot ended up motionless on stage while the upbeat music played, creating an oddly silent moment in the crowd.

After about ten seconds, a stagehand came in, grabbed the robot by the collar, and dragged it offstage, much to the amusement of viewers. This video has already racked up over 5.3 million views.

The ensuing reaction was mixed. One social media user expressed confusion about why people would feel threatened by robots, suggesting that the video might foster a negative view of them. Yet, despite some criticism, many found themselves entertained, potentially reflecting a wider sense of fatigue with the rapid introduction of robots in society. There’s an emerging “anti-ponkotsu” movement signaling a growing unease with machines that appear to threaten human jobs.

This particular robot, likely the Unitree G-1, certainly didn’t show the advanced abilities that were hyped in previous demonstrations. While it was once promoted for its martial arts skills and disaster recovery capabilities, here it stumbled comically in mere moments.
