Why Patrick Mahomes appreciated the conclusion of the top dynasty in college softball

Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Tweets Support for Texas Tech Softball Team

If you’re curious about what Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, was up to on Monday night, he was tweeting about his alma mater’s softball team. Seems fitting, right?

Texas Tech, a 12-seed in the NCAA Tournament, is making waves in the inaugural Women’s College World Series. They pulled off a stunning walk-off win against Oklahoma, which secured their spot in the championship stage and continued their quest for a fifth consecutive National Championship. Quite the dynasty, you might say.

The deciding moment for Texas Tech came in the seventh inning when Nijari Canady, their star pitcher, allowed a two-run homer from Abigare Dayton. This pivotal hit tied the game and set the tone for the Red Raiders’ thrilling victory.

Mihyia Davis reached base with a single to shallow center, advancing to third after teammate Hailey Toney doubled to deep left. Lauren Allred then knocked a ball deep enough into the outfield to send Davis home, bringing in the crucial run.

This marks a milestone season for Texas Tech. Not only have they claimed their first Big 12 title, but they also made their first-ever Super Regionals appearance, entered the World Series, and are now on the brink of a national championship after overcoming second-seeded Oklahoma 3-2.

Now, it’s worth noting—Patty Gasso’s Sooners have won four consecutive World Series titles, an achievement that’s hard to ignore. Their potential fifth would have been remarkable, but the Red Raiders snuffed out that possibility.

Mahomes showed immense enthusiasm as a Texas Tech supporter. He even tweeted several congratulatory messages.

Despite Canady giving up that two-run homer in the seventh, it was only the 11th home run she’s allowed this season in 226 innings, underlining why Texas Tech is so close to a national championship. Her performance was impressive Monday night—she allowed just five hits in seven innings and struck out eight batters.

This season, entering this game, Canady led all of Division I softball in wins (32), ERA (0.86), and hits allowed every seven innings (3.61). Additionally, she ranks highly in strikeouts and has proven to be a valuable asset at the plate, with 11 home runs and a batting average of .306.

Interestingly, Mahomes played a role in recruiting Canady when she was in the transfer portal last summer. Despite his accolades including three Super Bowl trophies and two NFL MVPs, he still took the time to reach out to her while she was on break in Italy.

Canady shared with ESPN, “Patrick Mahomes, I have his number, I can reach out to him. It’s pretty cool. Last July, we had lunch with a beautiful view of the football stadium. I sent him a photo to see if he’d respond, and he did—usually quick too, since he’s preparing for the season.”

While Texas Tech’s scholarship deal worth over a million is a significant factor, having one of the greatest quarterbacks in history on speed dial isn’t too shabby either.

Canady is riding a remarkable streak of 11 consecutive wins, with no losses since May 2nd.

This Wednesday at 8 PM, the Red Raiders will face former Big 12 rival Texas in the Championship Series. It will be the first such matchup in over 20 years at this level, reminiscent of the 2003 clash between Cal and UCLA. Mahomes isn’t the only one cheering for Canady and the Red Raiders as they take on Oklahoma City.
