Jordyn Bugg Signs Multi-Year Contract Extension with Seattle Reign
It all kicked off on July 19, 2024, when the NWSL’s Under-18 Entry Mechanism helped the Seattle Reign find a successor to club icon Lauren “Lu” Barnes, who dedicated 13 seasons to the team.
Today, the Reign announced that they have extended defender Jordyn Bugg’s contract through the 2030 NWSL season, solidifying her role in their central defense for the next four years.
“Seattle provided me with a chance to become a professional at such a young age, and I’m really thankful for the trust this club has given me from the start,” Bugg remarked. “I’ve already developed a lot here, both as a player and as a person, but I also feel, well, I’m just getting started.”
At just 20 years old, Bugg has already made a significant impact and is viewed as a potential future star for the USWNT, as well as a cornerstone for the Seattle franchise. Her contract extension places her among the longest-contracted players in the club, alongside goalkeeper Evan O’Steen.
“Jordyn embodies the values that we believe in and the direction we want this club to take,” said Lesle Gallimore, the General Manager of Seattle Reign FC. “She has positioned herself as one of the top young defenders in the league, and her maturity, competitive spirit, and drive for improvement give us great confidence in what she can achieve.”
Exceptional Defensive Stats
Bugg’s performance over just three seasons has already been remarkable. She’s been the youngest finalist for NWSL Defender of the Year, the youngest player on the NWSL Best XI Second Team, and a two-time finalist for U.S. Soccer’s Young Female Player of the Year.
How did she rise to such prominence so quickly? Seattle Reign head coach Laura Harvey believes that Bugg is still only beginning to tap into her potential.
“Jordyn’s understanding of the game and her ability to defend at a high level are exceptional, especially for someone at this stage of her career,” Harvey said. “She has achieved so much already, but what’s most thrilling is that there’s still even more room for growth.”
If we check the metrics, Bugg ranks among the top 15 for nearly all defensive categories. Here’s how she compares with other central defenders per 90 minutes:
- Third in defensive contributions
- Fourth in tackles
- Eighth in recoveries
- Tenth in blocks
- Tenth in accurate long balls
- Eleventh in clearances
- Eleventh in accurate passes
- Twelfth in interceptions
Bugg showcases a complete set of skills, whether it’s in a defensive role or acting as a playmaker, enabling her to effectively dominate and disrupt opposing attackers.
On the international front, she has already earned six caps for the USWNT, with many more expected in the future.
After over a decade under the guidance of Lauren Barnes, the torch has now been passed to the young defender Jordyn Bugg. The Seattle Reign can rest easy knowing their defense is in capable hands, backed by the potential of a rising star who’s just begun to explore her full capabilities, which, frankly, could be daunting for attackers across the NWSL.
