Why Trump is beginning to care less if TikTok disappears — even if just for a short time

President Trump is reportedly showing signs of discontent with TikTok’s uncertain future, as negotiations are ongoing. He seems weary of China using TikTok as leverage in trade discussions related to tariffs, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Both parties are edging toward a trade agreement, with Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent discussing progress before a deadline next Tuesday.

However, there’s a suggestion that these discussions could extend into the fall as final details emerge. Meanwhile, there’s speculation that TikTok’s fate may hang in the balance as the September 17 deadline approaches, at least until an agreement is reached that allows the app to continue operating.

Some might wonder if Trump would simply push for another executive order to extend TikTok’s operations, but indications are that it’s not that straightforward. TikTok executives seem uncertain, noting that Trump hasn’t clarified whether the app could face a temporary shutdown.

The potential deal hinges on U.S. investors being willing to invest significant sums to acquire TikTok, while also requiring China to relinquish enough control to satisfy U.S. regulations.

Yet, investors appear apprehensive about Trump’s repeated maneuvering, which they feel may skirt around typical legal frameworks.

There are concerns that Congress could intervene if things go awry. Additionally, China is keen on maintaining minority interests in TikTok and retaining ownership over critical app functionalities.

There are whispers among investors regarding data privacy, with some believing that Chinese surveillance practices could pose significant risks.

If an agreement is reached, investors might face hefty liabilities if legal disputes arise after Trump’s departure, given how previous regulations were outlined. Some are even asking for compensation for their potential losses.

Trump might be growing increasingly impatient with the TikTok saga. While he mentions that multiple buyers are interested in establishing a new U.S. entity to keep TikTok operational, I suspect Xi won’t allow it to be used as a bargaining chip in larger trade discussions.

Predictions suggest that Trump won’t easily compromise just to save TikTok. There were no comments from a White House representative.

TikTok, which boasts around 170 million U.S. users, seems to have found a reprieve from Trump, who once threatened a ban due to concerns over national security. Recently, he appeared to shift his stance, believing that favorable messaging on the platform could bolster his 2024 campaign appeal among younger voters.

This change of heart followed Trump’s rejection of a bipartisan bill signed by President Biden, which aimed to prohibit the app unless it severed ties with China by January 19. Through various executive orders, Trump has managed to prolong TikTok’s existence multiple times.
