Why viewing leftism as a mental illness is a 'soothing myth'

Political Conversations and Understanding Mental Health

As the divide between political ideologies grows wider, host Aaron McIntyre from Blaze TV comments on how some Americans label the inability to comprehend differing viewpoints as a “form of mental illness.”

He notes, “It’s common to seek explanations for atrocious actions, such as those committed by serial killers, by attributing them to significant mental health issues. However, this reasoning is often misapplied to political disagreements today.”

McIntyre continues, “Issues like abortion, hostility toward Christians and white individuals, and gender transition surgeries for minors seem so extreme that they must be linked to some kind of brain dysfunction. Yet, this isn’t the sole explanation.”

He further argues, “Another possibility is that individuals simply hold different values and pursue objectives that we might interpret as harmful. Many people are reluctant to acknowledge this reality because it leads to the unsettling realization that their political adversaries aren’t insane; they’re rational individuals who actively wish to do harm.”

McIntyre suggests that viewing radical leftists as mentally ill is easier than exploring other explanations. “To think that half of the nation is irrational simply because they disagree with our political beliefs is absurd,” he states. “The truth, however, is far more disturbing. We exist as at least two distinct societies within a single nation, each with incompatible moral frameworks and purposes.”

He explains that the supposed neutrality of liberalism has allowed these differences to fester out of sight, but they can no longer be overlooked. “Both camps have internally coherent views of the world, yet these views clash violently,” he adds.

McIntyre concludes, “Ultimately, one side will prevail while the other will face defeat, with the dominant perspective imposed on the other. Ignoring this truth in favor of comforting beliefs about mental illness only solidifies one’s position as a loser.”
