"Why Would You Release This Video?" Frank Luntz Criticizes Democrats for Urging the Military to Disobey Trump

Criticism of Democratic Lawmakers Over Video Statement

Pollster Frank Luntz expressed his disapproval on Tuesday regarding six Democratic members of Congress who called on military and intelligence officials to “reject illegal orders” from President Donald Trump’s administration. In a recent video, they suggested that some actions could lead to severe consequences, but Luntz clarified these were not threats.

During a discussion on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal,” Luntz suggested that the Democrats released the video primarily to provoke Trump, lacking any real purpose. He stated, “I found myself wondering, why would they release this video? Sure, they might be trying to make a joke, and it’s understood that illegal orders shouldn’t be followed. Our military has operated under established standards for a long time, and this approach seems more about stirring the pot politically.”

He continued, voicing concern for service members stationed globally. “It’s embarrassing, especially with many being away from home during Thanksgiving. They’re making significant sacrifices, and here we are, playing politics?”

Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan acknowledged on ABC News’ “This Week” that she couldn’t point to specific illegal orders from the Trump administration which would validate their position, despite her involvement in the video.

Meanwhile, the Department of the Army announced an investigation into Arizona Senator Mark Kelly in connection with the video. As a retired Navy captain, he remains under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and could be recalled as a veteran.

A statement from the Department of the Army reminded veterans of their subjection to the UCMJ regarding applicable offenses and noted that disruptions to military loyalty or discipline are prohibited by federal law. Any identified violations would be addressed through the proper legal channels.

On Monday, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth referred to the Democratic lawmakers as “six agitators” and specifically called out Kelly for his retired status. Hegseth emphasized the need to review Kelly’s statements and actions that appeared to use his military rank as an authoritative voice, asserting that such conduct dishonors the military and would be handled accordingly.
