A Kansas woman was shot and killed by police after she allegedly shot and killed her 14-year-old son, authorities said.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday that the 43-year-old woman is expected to survive. She was shot and killed early Monday morning after hours of negotiations.

Authorities said officers went to Claude Hodges’ apartment Sunday night after he received a call requesting a welfare check after his father failed to show up at a designated exchange location and could not be reached.

Police said no one answered the door. However, officers noticed bullet holes on the outside wall of the apartment, got the keys and went inside. The KBI said in a news release that the woman had a handgun with a shotgun nearby, so the officers quickly left.

After negotiations, the woman exited the apartment, but then grabbed a handgun and advanced toward the officer, prompting him to open fire.

After several hours of negotiation, the woman left the apartment. At first, she left her handgun on the ground. However, she picked it up around 1:40 a.m. Monday and began walking, pointing it in the direction of officers, according to the KBI.

Two Wichita police SWAT members each fired one shot, striking the woman, the KBI said. She was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery, but she is expected to survive, according to the KBI.
