Widows of deceased NYPD officers criticize Mamdani's change in support for police after the Midtown shooting: 'Not enough, not on time'

The widow of a deceased NYPD officer and a grieving mother are not in favor of mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s recent shift towards pro-police sentiments.

In an attempt to distance himself from his previous stance on police funding, Mamdani has changed his tone, particularly following the tragic deaths of police officers.

“Now he wants to claim he supports the police when an officer is killed?” questioned Tatyana Timoshenko, mother of slain NYPD Detective Russell Tymoshenko, in a conversation with the Post.

Tymoshenko, who lost her 23-year-old son in a shooting linked to a stolen BMW in 2007, struggles to reconcile Mamdani’s previous anti-police rhetoric with his newfound support aimed at aligning with his Muslim governing relatives.

“It’s honestly a little too late,” she said, expressing her dismay.

“This is heartbreaking for us all over again,” she continued. “It feels like a nightmare for our family. Our thoughts are with their families too.”

Grace Machete, the widow of Robert Machete, an NYPD officer murdered in 1989, labeled Mamdani as “dangerous” for the city.

“He’s just saying what young people want to hear now,” she remarked.

“He makes promises, but they don’t feel genuine,” Machete added.

Like another widow, Mahart, who was carrying her second child when her husband tragically died while on duty, faces a difficult reality.

An Islamic funeral for Mahart’s husband, a 36-year-old father of two, will be held Thursday. Both Mamdani and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to attend.

Upon returning from Uganda, Mamdani addressed the media and described his earlier tweets concerning police as “not aligned” with his current vision if elected.

“I’m not running on a platform to refund the police,” he asserted.
