Musk and Trump: Signs of Reconciliation After Tension
In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk, who had been close to Donald Trump during his presidency, appears to be attempting to mend fences after a public fallout.
Initially, Musk maintained a strong alliance with Trump, supporting him throughout his campaign and the start of his second term. However, tensions began to surface as Musk’s time as a government employee came to a close.
It became clear when Musk critiqued Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” expressing disappointment over its spending in May. While his comments started off rather mild, they intensified significantly as he distanced himself from Doge.
Beginning in early June, Musk took to his platform, X, amplifying his criticism. He described the bill as “ridiculous” and filled with “pork,” blasting the 215 Republicans who backed it.
Republican figures, including Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader John Tune, quickly rallied to Trump’s aid, insisting Musk had missed the mark on his judgment regarding the bill.
Despite the Republican unity, Musk continued with his pointed remarks online, raising eyebrows.
Some Republicans speculated that Musk’s discontent with the bill stemmed from a rule that removed electric vehicle tax credits—something that might impact his company, Tesla. Trump also noted that Musk had access to the legislation discussions but questioned why Musk was waiting to criticize it until after it reached the House.
Musk, in response, stated that the bill had not formally been presented to him and had effectively died before anyone even had a chance to read it.
He further claimed that Trump’s predictions of losing support without his backing and the potential for tariffs to trigger a recession were motives worth scrutiny. Musk even suggested a more absurd conspiracy involving Trump and Epstein.
Throughout this back-and-forth, Trump remained notably reserved. He referenced Musk’s comments a few times, merely wishing him well, but admitted he had little interest in discussing matters with him.
Recently, Musk has taken steps to soften his stance, deleting several controversial posts, even those that hinted at conspiracy theories. It seems he may be trying to restore his relationship with Trump by acting as if their previous tensions never occurred.
Musk has started retweeting supportive posts from Republicans like JD Vance and engaging with Trump’s posts on social media. In one exchange, he even reacted with a heart emoji.
He commented humorously that the character attacks against him were quite excessive, which I suppose is true in some regard.
While Musk hasn’t offered a public apology to Trump, it does appear he wants to take a more conciliatory route. Whether the past tensions can be fully resolved remains to be seen, but this unexpected shift raises questions about the future of their relationship.
