Will Ferrell Shines at NHL Game in Referee Gear
During Thursday’s NHL match, Will Ferrell was gearing up for an amusing moment. The beloved actor was seen in the audience at Crypto.com Arena, fully dressed in officiating attire for a game between the Kings and Lightning.
The videoboard captured Ferrell in the iconic black and white striped shirt, complete with a black helmet, as he humorously called a penalty from outside the glass.
When the FanDuel Sports Network footage aired on the big screen, a crew member approached Ferrell to ask about his referee getup.
“I’ve always supported NHL referees,” Ferrell replied with a grin.
He then joked about the two referees on the ice, Brandon Schroeder and Francis Sharon, claiming he had a hand in coaching them. “Actually, I trained two of the guys here. They’re two of my dearest students, Brandon and Francis. They’re calling some hell of a match,” he quipped.
As a devoted Kings fan and season ticket holder, Ferrell has made appearances at games before. In 2024, he was spotted dressed as Buddy from the classic movie “Elf” during a match against the Flyers.
While in the stands, Ferrell was seen with a cigarette and beer in hand, looking a bit moody. He discussed the outfit choice on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce in January 2025.
“I think Buddy the Elf was fired from the North Pole,” he joked on the podcast. “He was drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. It’s just… I sometimes come up with weird ideas.”
Ferrell also shared how he came to don the Buddy costume, mentioning he thought it’d be entertaining to buy the outfit for fun and see the crowd’s reactions. “We have seats behind glass,” he explained to his wife, adding how it would be a quirky vacation concept to go all out with it.
