Will Ospreay triumphs in Owen Hart Tournament match, promises to elevate AEW to new heights

Ospreay’s Dream Match at AEW Double or Nothing

New York – On Sunday night, Will Ospreay achieved what he called his “dream match” during All Elite Wrestling’s (AEW) Double or Nothing pay-per-view event.

Ospreay faced off against Samoa Joe in the opening round of the Owen Hart Men’s Tournament. The tournament’s winner will secure a chance to compete for the AEW World Championship at All In, which is AEW’s inaugural event of the year, set at Wembley Stadium in England.

Right from the start, Ospreay shocked Joe with an Oz Cutter. The two wrestlers battled fiercely, but Ospreay ultimately claimed victory after connecting several Hidden Blades. In the post-match interview, the “Aerial Assassin” was queried about his potential to lead AEW and to become the organization’s face, especially if he secures the title later this year.

“It’s because of that confidence and belief that I can carry these three letters,” he remarked, referring to the AEW brand. “The letter ‘E’ in the middle, that’s the standard, mate, Elite. When everyone talks about Elite Pro Wrestling, there’s no better fighter on this planet. I believe in that with all my heart. I believe in that with my soul.”

He elaborated, “I know what I’m capable of. This place, the motto, and it’s said over and over again, ‘This is the best place for wrestling.’ No, buddy. This is where the ‘billy goats’ wrestle. And I’m more ready than ever to take that top spot and take AEW to new heights.”

Ospreay also reflected on his dreams, noting how while others envisioned careers as footballers, he aspired to perform at Wembley Stadium as a wrestler.

Despite facing a neck injury in the past, he trained diligently with the Death Riders to return to form. That journey evidently irritated Joe, leading to their clash at Double or Nothing.

In the semi-finals, Ospreay is set to meet either Mark Davis or Jack Perry. Meanwhile, Swerve Strickland triumphed over Bandido and will take on either Claudio Castagnoli or Brody King in the other semi-final bracket.

The Owen Cup final is scheduled for June 28th at Forbidden Door.
