President Donald Trump is set to present the FIFA World Cup trophy to the winner of the match between Spain and Argentina on Sunday, as confirmed by a White House official. Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino mentioned during an appearance on “Fox & Friends” that both he and President Trump would be present at the New York-New Jersey Stadium for the trophy presentation.
Infantino also indicated that Trump would play a role during the event. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt described the president’s attendance as a “fitting conclusion” to a convention showcasing America’s capability to host major international events.
Interestingly, last summer, Trump participated in the FIFA Club World Cup trophy presentation ceremony when Chelsea triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain.
At the start of the World Cup, Trump found himself involved in a significant controversy, as he contacted Infantino regarding the red card handed to Folarin Balogun. Although Balogun was initially suspended for the U.S. men’s national team’s Round of 16 match, he was later permitted to play.
While President Trump has not yet watched any World Cup matches, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was seen attending the U.S. men’s team’s opening game against Paraguay, which ended in a 4-1 defeat for the U.S.
During the World Cup final draw last December, Trump received the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Recently, Trump was present at Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, and UFC Freedom 250 took place at the White House last month. Additionally, an IndyCar race is scheduled to occur in Washington, D.C. next month.
