Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic: TX tradition heads to Philadelphia area

Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic takes two steps from Texas to the Philadelphia area.

The country’s luminary’s near-annual mega-concert, held in his native Texas for most of its 50-year history, will return to the Northeast for the first time this July, with the duo of Bob Dylan and Robert Plant also participating. The outdoor amphitheater is just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia.

The huge Patriot Party, which Nelson first founded in 1973, has occasionally expanded outside the Lone Star State to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Kansas City; Atlanta, and most recently in South Bend, Indiana in 2009. The past 10 years have been held in Austin, with the exception of virtual concerts in 2020 and 2021.

At age 90, Nelson never slowed down the pace of constant touring, recording, and performing that he had done for more than 60 years. Last April, he celebrated his birthday with a two-night tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and in November he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
