Winchester Cathedral makes its historic medieval deanery available for holiday rentals

Unique Holiday Rental at Winchester Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral, a remarkable monument from 1093, is offering a distinctive chance for history enthusiasts to spend a holiday in its historic Deenary residence.

Starting in late July, the Tudor-era Deanery, which has been unoccupied since the previous dean left in March 2025, will be available for rent until a new dean is appointed.

The Cathedral, celebrated as the longest medieval Gothic structure in Europe, is situated about 70 miles southeast of London, within the city of Winchester, Hampshire. Interestingly, this marks the first occasion that the Deanery—a property built during King Henry VIII’s reign—has been offered as a vacation rental.

The Deanery, originally constructed to host King Charles II, features a 70-foot-long gallery and Roman mosaics adorning its porches. It’s conveniently located near the cathedral and within a community that includes priests and Vergers.

Additionally, guests can enjoy close proximity to the Ichen River, which is notable for its unique chalkstream characteristics, featuring a lush garden abundant with trees and flowerbeds.

Nonetheless, visitors won’t be spending the night within the cathedral itself. A representative from Winchester Cathedral mentioned that guests will still have access to the cathedral nave.

“This might be the first time a holiday rental allows short stays for guests within such an iconic site,” they remarked.

Guests renting the Deanery will also have opportunities for tours and local access, with the area remaining unusually open to the public only with a guide.

It’s worth noting that the Deanery has previously hosted notable figures, including Charles II and Queen Elizabeth II, along with former Prime Minister Anthony Eden.

However, there are some conditions to consider. A minimum rental period of three days is required, and the entire payment is needed at the time of booking.

For a week’s stay, the cost is approximately $6,000 and can rise to about $7,300 during the Christmas season.

Alasdair Akass, the Development Director at Winchester Cathedral, described the Deanery as “a typical British house” that has been thoroughly modernized.

“Renting this Deanery provides a rare opportunity for families to enjoy a peaceful and beautiful setting,” Akass expressed.

In a light-hearted turn of events, the first family to book the Deanery was from the United States and even shared the Winchester surname.

Maintaining England’s historic cathedrals is costly, with Winchester Cathedral noting that holiday rentals contribute approximately $19,000 toward daily maintenance expenses.
