UConn Claims No. 1 Spot Again in WNBA Draft

Once more, UConn has snagged the top pick in the WNBA Draft.

Aj Fuad was selected by the Dallas Wings, a moment that brings her back together with last year’s first pick and ex-Union University standout, Paige Bueckers.

Bueckers, dating Fuad and having won a national title with her in 2024, was seen visibly thrilled and applauding during the announcement.

There were some doubts about Fuad’s draft status due to a challenging NCAA Tournament, yet her shooting prowess remains undeniable. She maintained a 42.2% career shooting rate from deep, including an impressive 44.4% this past season.

Even nearly an hour post-draft, Fuad was still in disbelief and finding it hard to articulate her emotions.

“I’m really speechless,” she expressed. “Sitting there with my family… I couldn’t have imagined it. I’m just so grateful.”

Fuad feels optimistic about fitting into the Wings’ backcourt.

“They could see my team spirit. I know how to play with strong players, space the floor, and move without the ball… I’m just really excited,” she stated.

Meanwhile, TCU’s Olivia Miles was chosen second by the Minnesota Lynx.

The Phillipsburg, N.J. native was nearly a lottery pick last year but opted to return for her final college season. She transferred from Notre Dame to TCU before the 2025-26 season and credited her coach, Mark Campbell, for guiding her to this achievement.

“It’s like taking a deep breath,” Miles shared, reflecting on her selection. “Hearing my name called was really emotional. I’m finally here. This is what it’s all about.”

In another significant selection, 19-year-old Spanish center Our Pham Thiam went third overall to the Seattle Storm.

UCLA made a strong showing in the draft, with Lauren Betts going fourth overall to the Washington Mystics. The Chicago Sky picked Gabriella Jax at fifth, followed by the Toronto Tempo selecting guard Kiki Rice sixth.

“I’d love to say I’m surprised, but honestly, I’m not,” Betts commented on UCLA’s third successive year of having players drafted. “I know how talented my teammates are, and they’ve truly earned every moment of tonight. Their hard work has been incredible to watch.”
