May Lo Xiong defeated rival Jean Rechzigel on Tuesday to win the Republican nomination for Minnesota’s 4th Congressional District, setting her up to face off against incumbent Democratic Rep. Betty McCollum in November’s general election.

The race was a rematch between two Republicans who faced off in the 2022 primary along with Jerry Silver.

In the 2022 election, Xiong won with 44% of the vote, Silver with 34% and Rechzigel with 22%, according to Ballotpedia.

Xiong, a refugee from Thailand and former teacher, ran on a platform of fighting inflation and reforming Washington’s reckless spending, while attacking McCullom as a career politician out of touch with the realities in his district.

Rechzigel, a self-described farmer and property manager, has focused his campaign on ousting McCollum, blasting the incumbent Democrat for his handling of water safety issues reported by many district residents.

Meanwhile, the Cook Political Report classifies the 4th District as “solidly” Democratic.
