Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) announced Saturday that he will not seek re-election this fall after completing four terms.
Gallagher, chairman of the Chinese Communist Party Special Committee, issued a statement via social media saying when he ran for office eight years ago, he “promised to treat my tenure as a strong deployment.”
He served seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps before running for Congress. Gallagher said that throughout his time on the Military Intelligence Committee, he accomplished “more than I could have ever imagined with this deployment.”
“But the framers intended for the people to serve as MPs for one season and then return to private life. Electoral politics was never meant to be a profession, and believe me, Congress is not the place to grow old. there is no.” His statement said: “Therefore, with a heavy heart, I have decided not to run for re-election.”
Mr. Gallagher was one of three House members who opposed Republicans this week, voting against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and watering down the bill. He declined to state his position against impeachment throughout the day, but ultimately voted against impeachment on Tuesday.
On the House floor, leading Republicans swarmed the Wisconsin lawmaker and appeared to be trying to force him to convict and change his vote. In his op-ed, he argued that impeaching Mayorkas would “open Pandora’s box.”
The next day, Alex Brucewicz, a Republican consultant who works with former President Trump, considered running against Gallagher in Wisconsin’s 8th election.th district. Sources told The Hill that there was “tremendous” interest from members of Congress and “Trump allies” in Brusewitz to challenge Gallagher after he voted against impeaching Mayorkas. I admitted that.
In a statement, Gallagher thanked “the good people of Northeast Wisconsin for giving me the honor of a lifetime.” He said serving four terms in Congress strengthened his belief that “America is the greatest country in the history of the world.”
“My title may change, but my mission will always be the same: to thwart America’s enemies and protect the Constitution,” he concluded.
