Wisconsin teenager Joniah Walker discovered safe four years after vanishing from her home in Milwaukee

Missing Wisconsin Teen Found Safe After Four Years

A teen from Wisconsin, who vanished from her home four years ago, has been located safe and sound. Her family had feared she had been “lured away.” Jonia Walker, now 19, was discovered by Milwaukee police on May 25.

Details about the circumstances of her discovery remain unclear, with law enforcement not releasing information on where she was found or if she was accompanied by anyone.

Walker disappeared from her home on June 23, 2022, when she was only 15. Her mother, Tanesha Howard, recounted that she last saw Jonia lying in bed before heading to work that fateful morning.

“Jonia had just finished school and was resting,” Howard shared, recalling how she went to give her daughter a hug. Throughout that day, they spoke multiple times, but suddenly, Walker stopped responding.

She was supposed to meet her father to apply for a summer job but never showed up. Concerned, her father called Howard, and she immediately sensed something was wrong. “I quit my job right away,” she said.

A Ring camera nearby captured Walker leaving an apartment complex in the Brewers Hill area around 2:30 p.m. The footage showed a boy with a large green backpack. That was the last known sighting of her until she was found last month.

Howard has always believed that after Jonia erased her online presence, she may have met someone and left. “Someone took her… that was my gut feeling,” she expressed. “But seeing her leave with that huge backpack confirmed my fears. It felt like someone had lured her away.”

In past appeals, Howard repeatedly urged her daughter to return home and to reach out. “She’s my youngest, so I call her ‘baby girl’ because that’s exactly what she is,” she said, describing Jonia as angelic, soft-spoken, and intelligent.

Jonia’s case has brought attention to a legislative effort led by Wisconsin Representative Shelia Stubbs, aiming to form a task force focused on missing and murdered African American women and girls. Stubbs expressed her belief that Jonia was still alive and reassured Howard about her daughter’s eventual return.

“I never believed Jonia was dead; I just knew it was a matter of time,” Stubbs remarked. While there are many questions surrounding the case, she emphasized the need for the family to have privacy during this time and suggested they would share their story when they felt ready.
