Wizards Mess Up April Fool’s Day Prank
The Wizards, sitting at the bottom of the standings, have managed to mess up even an April Fool’s Day joke.
During their game against the 76ers on Wednesday night, the team surely didn’t get the laughs they were aiming for. In fact, it led to an apology from Washington officials the following morning.
“We missed the mark,” the Wizards admitted, reflecting on the situation.
The skit was supposed to take place during a break at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. A blindfolded participant was instructed by a host that he could win $10,000 if he made a half-court shot. Unfortunately, when he released the ball, it didn’t even come close to hitting the backboard. But, in a rather dubious attempt to save face, several mascots ran in to simulate a made shot.
Then, in a twist, fans were handed out checks, only to swiftly have them taken back upon realizing they hadn’t actually won anything.
The reaction on social media was swift and critical, with many voicing their dissatisfaction. It wasn’t just lighthearted jokes—it was serious backlash.
“We apologize for last night’s April Fool’s joke, which left many wondering if we misled our fans,” the team said in a statement. “The skits involving our mascots and performance team were scripted to celebrate the holiday. Everyone in attendance was in on the joke, but we missed the mark. Our fans are our top priority, and we remain committed to providing a positive experience for everyone attending our games.”
This incident adds to what has been a tough season for the Wizards, who currently hold a 17-59 record. But there’s a silver lining: the season wraps up in less than two weeks, so fans won’t have to endure much longer.
