WNBA Coach Faces Backlash Over Foul Comments

WNBA coach Stephanie White is under scrutiny for stating she “didn’t see” a flagrant foul committed against star player Sophie Cunningham, although footage suggests otherwise.

On Tuesday, White expressed frustration, telling critics to “go to hell” for not backing her players. After Cunningham was hit hard by Chicago Sky forward Dijonai Carrington, White initially seemed more sympathetic to Carrington than to her own player. This reaction has raised eyebrows among observers.

To add to the confusion, White claimed she “didn’t see” the foul as it happened, which seemed like an attempt to distance herself from the controversy.

In a tirade against what she called an “online community” trying to distort her image, she remarked, “For those of you who want to say something about the play from the last game, I did not see that play in real time.”

However, various images and clips depict White looking directly at the incident involving Cunningham.

White has not directly addressed the inconsistency, even though visuals from the game indicate that she must have witnessed the foul. Despite criticism, she maintains that Carrington did not “deliberately” target Cunningham. Yet she directed her anger at critics, insisting they could “go to hell.”

She stated, “The reality is, I will always lead with love. I will always lead with grace, I will always lead with humility, and I will always lead with integrity. It doesn’t mean I will always do it right. I’m a human too. Those who hate, fearmonger, divide, and try to take over our league will not win.”

After her passionate remarks, White abruptly left the press area without answering any questions.

Many remain skeptical. White has been notably quiet about the ongoing rough treatment received by players like Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham during games. When she does speak, it often comes across as a timid response rather than a strong defense.
