WNBA couple DiJonai Carrington, NaLyssa Smith break down flirtatious foul

Connecticut Suns guard Di’Jonai Carrington and Indiana Fever forward NaLyssa Smith have finally spoken out about the infamous foul that involved the WNBA couple last season.

Last year, while the Fever was playing the Sun, Carrington was fouled by Smith while getting a rebound, and Smith helped Carrington off the court in a move that was viewed on social media as gentler than a typical opponent.

In an Instagram Live broadcast over the weekend, Carrington and Smith, who were teammates at Baylor University, explained what happened.

Carrington said he was making a “basketball play” by grabbing the loose ball and trying to foul Smith.

“She ran straight through me. I felt like she lasted at least 10 seconds,” Carrington said.

Mr. Smith laughed and said, “That’s because you were in a dream.”

“She swears she didn’t do it on purpose – she said, ‘I was just making sure you didn’t fall,’ but the way she put her arms around me, they were almost intertwined in front of me,” Carrington continued.

Mr Carrington told Smith: “You’ve been procrastinating” and called on him to “finally concede”.

“How did they drag you in? They hooked you,” Smith said.

Carrington asked Smith if she helps everybody like that, to which Smith replied, “I’m not talking about everybody. I’m talking about you. I just wanted to help her. She sticks her little butt out like that. Now we’re on a roll.”

Both told the other they knew “exactly” what they were doing.

Carrington has been involved in some controversy this season with Smith’s teammate, Caitlin Clark.

Last month, Carrington mocked Clark’s failings, slamming him for not speaking out about being “weaponized” on social justice issues. She said she just wants to focus on basketball..

“Come on. How can you not care that your name is being used to justify racism, bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia and the intersectionality of it all? Funny,” Carrington wrote to X.

“We’re all aware of this shit. We all have a voice. We all have a say, and each one carries weight. Silence is a luxury.”
