WNBA news: Paige Bueckers expresses disappointment over unequal attention given to Black women

Paige Bueckers gained national attention during her time with the UConn Huskies when she expressed her concerns about the limited media coverage for Black women in sports at the 2021 ESPY Awards.

Now, nearly four years later, Bueckers has reiterated that Black women continue to face inadequate media representation and that white individuals are the primary beneficiaries of marketing opportunities.

“That’s still a problem, every day,” remarked the Dallas Wings rookie in an interview shared recently. She noted a disparity in popularity, stating, “I see there’s a white privilege… I feel like I’m working so hard, and I’m blessed with God. But I think there are more opportunities for me. People tend to prefer white people—men and women.” She emphasized that everyone should have equal opportunities.

Bueckers is poised to become a prominent figure in the next generation of basketball talent that will shape the WNBA’s future.

Her remarks echo sentiments previously expressed by Caitlyn Clark, who also discussed similar issues in an interview last year.

The Indiana Fever player acknowledged the privilege she holds as a white athlete, saying, “I’ve watched this league grow…” She recognized the contributions of many Black women who helped build the league and stated, “They deserve all the credit, and we need to do better for them.”

Acknowledging her own privilege during various interviews, Clark highlighted that while she appreciates her success, many outstanding players in the league have been Black. “The league is built on their backs,” she underlined.

Clark stressed the importance of promoting and investing in the league while ensuring that the achievements of Black women are acknowledged: “If we can raise visibility for Black women, that’s beautiful.”
