USA’s 250th Anniversary Celebrated by Sports Leagues

As the United States gears up to celebrate its 250th anniversary, several professional sports leagues are donning special USA 250 patches on their jerseys during major tournaments.

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots showcased these patches during the Super Bowl, while the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are sporting them in the NBA Finals.

When it comes to the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game in late July, Las Vegas Aces forward Brianna Turner expressed her thoughts on her X account, calling out the irony of the USA 250 patch. She remarked, “Those who insisted on placing the USA 250 patch on WNBA All-Stars should remember that no player would have had freedom 250 years ago. In fact, many would not have had it even 100 years ago.”

Initial reports indicated that WNBA All-Star jerseys would feature the red, white, and blue patch. However, due to significant backlash on social media, a league spokesperson clarified that, like other major sports, they are still trying to figure out how best to commemorate the anniversary. Nothing has been finalized, as mentioned in a statement by USA Today.

This patch initiative was officially unveiled by Fanatics earlier this year as part of an agreement involving various sports leagues, and notably, the WNBA was omitted from the list. The celebration is being led by America 250, a congressional organization set up to oversee the events marking the nation’s anniversary.

Interestingly, Brianna Turner highlighted the complex interplay of sports and politics. She noted that many WNBA players had previously shown support for political figures, making the patch’s introduction even more contentious.

“I understand this was likely a financial decision,” Turner added, acknowledging the complicated dynamics at play.
