WNBA players are the key to rescuing NBA All-Star Weekend

NBA and WNBA All-Star Events Adaptation

The NBA and WNBA All-Star events have seen some notable changes lately. With rising sponsorships, enhanced NBA salaries, and shorter attention spans from fans, particularly regarding the NBA All-Star Game, viewer ratings have taken a hit. This decline is concerning, as it’s hard to motivate players to give their best when there’s a real fear of injury or a lack of incentives—especially in various activities like 3-point contests or skill challenges that the league tries to innovate. A $25,000 prize might be attractive to WNBA players, given their lower pay, but NBA players, well, they’re just too well-compensated to really be swayed by that.

A couple of years ago, the NBA made a significant effort to lure fans back to its All-Star festivities by organizing a shooting contest featuring Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu in 2024. Though “Battle of the Sexes” events can often spiral into awkward discussions with sexist commentary, this particular matchup was quite well-executed. Both Ionescu and Curry are among the sport’s best shooters and good friends, which added a layer of mutual respect throughout the event.

This wasn’t your typical 3-point contest. Ionescu, being a woman, didn’t really face any disadvantages; she could have shot from the WNBA’s three-point line if she chose, but instead, she opted for the NBA’s standard distance. That distance was certainly within her range.

All proceeds from the contest were pledged to charity, with both participants committing to their own foundations. This event was also prompted by Ionescu having set a record for the most points in a 3-point contest during the previous year’s WNBA All-Star Game. Fans were eager to see how she would stack up against top NBA shooters, and this contest fulfilled that curiosity.

The contest turned out to be a phenomenal success, drawing over 5 million viewers, the highest for NBA All-Star Saturday in more than five years. It even outperformed the actual All-Star Game in terms of viewership, peaking during the shooting contest itself. Although Ionescu lost 29-26 to Curry, her score of 26 points matched that of the NBA 3-point contest winner that year, which certainly helped earn her respect.

In the aftermath, there was considerable enthusiasm for a repeat of this event. Caitlin Clark, who was still in college back then, generated buzz as fans speculated about her potential to join the shooting contest. There were ideas floated for a match-up involving her or even facing off against an NBA star like Damian Lillard. Unfortunately, none of these plans seemed to materialize.

In fact, neither Ionescu nor Clark has participated in another 3-point contest since that standout performance. In the summer of 2024, Ionescu decided to skip the WNBA All-Star 3-point Contest to focus on the upcoming Paris Olympics. That same year, Clark also turned down an invitation, wanting to take a break after a stretched basketball season.

Fast forward to the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, and Clark also declined an invite from the NBA. She had ambitions for her first WNBA All-Star shooting contest, yet that didn’t come to be. The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game took place in Indianapolis, where Clark, playing for the Indiana Fever, would have ideally made her appearance. Unfortunately, hopes were dashed as she faced a series of injuries, preventing her from participating in most of the season and the All-Star Game itself.

The anticipation for the Steph vs. Sabrina matchup continues to simmer, but there’s been a noticeable void since it. Fans eagerly await a 3-point contest featuring Clark, especially as it could provide a significant boost to an otherwise lagging All-Star Weekend. However, this concept hasn’t taken shape in nearly two years since Clark’s debut, and with the NBA and WNBA players vying for the next collective bargaining agreement, that seems unlikely this year.

It’s quite surprising that the NBA managed to create such an engaging experience that connected the WNBA fan base while generating excitement, yet hasn’t repeated this success. Adding that to the list of missed opportunities during Adam Silver’s tenure seems to be the takeaway here.
