WNBA to Discuss Transgender Athlete Eligibility
Recently, the WNBA’s task force announced plans to hold a meeting focused on the eligibility of transgender athletes in the league.
This gathering is set to involve a wide range of league officials, including the president and general manager, and takes place Wednesday, reflecting ongoing controversies surrounding the league.
In a memo to team reps, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert mentioned this issue would come up for discussion; however, it appears the meeting may not yield any definitive policy decisions just yet.
The league acknowledged on social media that the meeting covered various topics, especially the continuing debates around transgender athletes and the negative commentary athletes receive online. “We will continue to thoughtfully engage in these important conversations,” the WNBA stated.
In light of recent protests and counter-protests, there have been increasing demands for the league to implement a women-only policy, a movement gaining traction in sports globally.
Interestingly, the WNBA clarified that there are no immediate eligibility concerns and condemned attempts to exploit these discussions to harm or diminish anyone.
This statement seems to address recent comments from some former NBA players looking to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, a move spurred by the lack of a clear definition of “woman” within the league’s agreements.
Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom even remarked, “See you at training camp,” looking ahead to the future draft.
The WNBA’s 2026 Collective Bargaining Article highlights that “only female players are eligible to play,” yet it lacks a specific definition for “female.” The league has not responded to inquiries regarding how it defines a woman.
In a related note, former player Royce White has also claimed to identify as transgender in hopes of joining the league. He expressed, “I sometimes identify as a woman because of basketball,” stating intentions to enter the 2027 draft.
Additionally, Julie Tetal, an impressive player in France’s women’s basketball league, has indicated he wouldn’t decline an offer from the WNBA, saying, “If I get a call, I won’t say no.”
